Resume Length in Germany: One Page or Two?

In Germany, two pages is the norm. One page suits people early in their career, and three pages is almost always too many. If you come with the American one-page rule in mind, drop it. German recruiters expect a tabular CV (tabellarischer Lebenslauf) that is complete, and they do not mind the second page.

Rule of thumb by experience

• 0–3 years (graduates, juniors): one page is enough. Internships and working-student jobs count as experience. A school internship from ten years ago does not.
• 3–15 years: two pages, the normal case. There is room for every position with concrete results, and nothing important falls off the end.
• 15 years or more, or a management career: still aim for two pages. Sum up early positions in one line (“Earlier positions, 2008–2014”) instead of listing each one.

What sits on page one matters more than the page count. Recruiters decide within the first 30 to 60 seconds, and they spend them at the top of the first page. Put your summary, your current role and your most relevant results there.

What really makes a CV too long

Long CVs rarely come from too many jobs. The usual causes are these:

• Lists of duties instead of results. “Responsible for customer support” fills a line and says little. “Cut the complaint rate by 30 %” says more in less space.
• Old details. The year of your Abitur or school-leaving exam is enough. Grades and course choices stop mattering after your first job.
• Filler sections. Hobbies that show nothing, “basic knowledge” of software everyone uses, and stock adjectives such as “team player” or “resilient” take space your results could use.

When it almost fits

Cut before you squeeze. A font below 10 pt and narrow margins are easy to spot and look like a trick. Shorten your oldest position to two lines instead, or test every line against the job ad. A line that answers no requirement in the ad can go.
